Winter is charming

Between autumn and spring, winter is the coldest season of the year.

The name “winter” is derived from an old Germanic word that means “time of water” and refers to the rain and snow that fall during this season in middle and high latitudes.

It is generally believed to last from the winter solstice (the shortest day of the year), December 21 or 22, to the vernal equinox (day and night are equal in length), March 20 or 21, and in the southern hemisphere, from June 21 or 22 to September 22 or 23. Only in middle and high latitudes do winter low temperatures occur; in equatorial regions, the annual high temperature is nearly constant.

In European languages, the idea of winter is connected to the period of dormancy, especially in terms of crops. Some plants die, leaving their seeds, while others simply slow their growth until spring. Additionally, a lot of animals go dormant, especially those that hibernate, and a lot of insects perish.
